world wide hole
world wide hole : opening virtual holes in the whole wide world.
WORLD WIDE HOLE
world wide hole is an opensource art project aimed at opening virtual holes all over the world.
Imagine digging a tunnel through the earth and being able to look down in this hole and see someone else looking down at you from the other side of the earth.
World wide hole makes this possible.
the aim of world wide hole is to create a network of openings all over the world.
Each of the holes in the network will be able to connect to any other hole. A computer program will automate random connections which will change daily, connecting different locations together at different times. The website www.worldwidehole,net will include a calendar showing a schedule of hole connections. In addition to random hole connections, 2 holes will be able to choose a specific date and time which they wish to be connected. the goal: each hole acts as a window between different social and cultural realities, creating the possibilities of communication cooperation and exchange.
World wide hole uses Voip technology such as Skype and common hardware (laptop computer, lcd monitor, webcam, speakers) and is accesible to anyone with a highspeed internet connection. World wide hole is nothing new, video conferencing has exsisted for a while, the goal of world wide hole is to use this existing technology in a new way. World wide hole is not a telephone call. There is no hanging up. 2 holes in two spaces are connected to each other at a certain time and for a certain time. The holes are like a campfire where people come to gather together, some possible uses are:
holes in the subway: everyone around the world waits in the subway for thier train, this moment could be the occasion to meet someone else in the world, also waiting for the train.
holes for jam sessions: musicians around the world could meet at a hole and play music together through the hole.
holes as public sculptures: imagine a giant hole in the middle of times square New York, which is conected to a similar hole in front of the eiffel tower, Paris.
holes for peace: i would love to make a hole between Israel and Palestine, Israel and Lebanon, Washington and Bagdad, north korea and south korea, etc...
holes in nightclubs: imagine dancing in Tokyo, and seeing other people dancing with you in Berlin!
holes in schools: schools all over the world could be connected and share and learn from each other.
holes in offices: With globalization, more and more companies have offices all over the world, a hole could be opened in the lobby of thier different branches in different countries.
holes for family: Families who are spread out geographically could have a hole in thier homes, connecting them to thier loved ones.
these are just a few of the possibilities of world wide hole. The project is just begining and i will be adding more information soon.
for now,
